Moorish Castle
Gibraltar's oldest surviving building: a Moorish keep raised after Tariq ibn Ziyad's landing in 711 and rebuilt in 1333, still flying the Union flag over the town.
The Rock takes its name from Tariq — Jebel Tariq, Tariq's mountain — and the castle is what is left of the six centuries of Moorish rule that followed. Cannonball scars from the sieges are still visible on the tower's northern wall.
You can climb through the keep to the roof, which gives the best view there is of the isthmus, the frontier and the airport runway crossing the only road into Spain.
Our tip
Included on the extended route as standard. On the ninety-minute tour we usually photograph it from below rather than climb it.
